Hydromagnesite considered!

Our new article, “Hydromagnesite on Earth and Mars,” is out in Nature Geoscience!

Co-authored with Yongjie Lin, the article explores the surprisingly important role of hydromagnesite, a hydrated magnesium carbonate with two fascinating planetary connections: its potential for carbon dioxide removal on Earth and its potential to preserve biosignatures of past microbial life on Mars.

From alkaline lakes and mine tailings on Earth to ancient lake deposits on Mars, this humble mineral may have something to tell us about both our planet’s future climate and the search for extraterrestrial life.
